Variations of anxiety

There are various types of anxiety, some of which include:

  • — Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

  • — Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • — Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • — Social anxiety

Calm your mind

It is important to take time out of your day to calm your mind. Whether it is to read a book or take a nap, you should always prioritize your well being. Here are a few things you can do to ease your anxiety:

  • Write out your worries and fears

  • Expressive writing, or writing about difficult emotions that you have about your life or a specific situation, has been found to be beneficial in a wide range of studies. You set a fixed amount of time, each day, to write out how you feel about difficult things that are going on.

  • Breathe

  • Use the “4-6-8” breath technique at various times throughout the day. Breathe in through your nose for 4 counts, hold it deeply in your lungs for 6, and breathe out through your mouth for 8, breathing out tension as you do so and feeling your body relax.

  • Use the 5 senses exercises

  • This technique consists of focusing on your 5 senses and your surroundings, while taking your mind off your anxious feelings. Here's how you do it. Start by naming five things you can see in the room with you. Acknowledge 4 things around you that you can touch. Listen and name three things you can hear right now. Focus on two things you can smell right now. Finally, think about one positive thing about yourself. By doing these steps you will feel a bit more grounded.
